Sherwood Methodist Church

Sherwood English Methodist Youth Fellowship (EMYF)

What a wonderful first half of the year we’ve had so far! The Sherwood EMYF has happily grown over the last year and we are now becoming a strong and supportive family of brothers and sisters.

This year’s theme is “Leaving the Elementary”. Our committee this year comprising of: a new member Racheal Wong (Secretary), Joash Lian (Treasurer), Josh Lian (Praise and Worship – on leave), Amos Wong (Praise and Worship – replacement), Michelle Tan (Caring), Jeffrey Cheng (Discipleship) and myself (Chairperson) decided on this theme as a follow on from last year’s theme.

Our theme last year was “Dinner with God” where we focused on fostering stronger Christian relationships between members of our youth group, and where we can share our problems and successes with each other, just like around the dinner table. This year’s theme of “Leaving the Elementary” uses this foundation to challenge members of the youth to embark on a journey of Christian maturity. It focuses on the importance of continual spiritual growth and learning new things, rather than being content with the basic Christian knowledge we acquired in Sunday School. Thus, the committee have challenged the youth group to “Leave the Elementary”.

Below was our first youth group meeting in the beginning of the year, where everyone wore his or her old school uniforms. We did this to metaphorically represent that this year is all about leaving these school uniforms behind to focus on becoming more mature Christians and actively learning more about the bible.

Since then our bible studies have been discussing more interesting and challenging topics. This has been tremendously aided by Sean Kong, who is in his final year of theology training and helping us out as our Youth Advisor.

We also have focussed on being more involved in the community. We recently performed a Bike Ride Challenge where 10 members of our youth had to ride a bicycle for as far and as long as they could for 30 minutes. As a whole we raised over $15,000, which was tremendous. Praise God!

I also have to make note of our previous Youth Minister, Rev Alan Pang, who semi-retired from his position earlier this year. He and his wife, Angeline Pang, were a tremendous support to our youth and helped in its growth. We sorely miss them, and wish them well on their journey ahead.

There are still many more interesting adventures of the Sherwood EMYF, and I can’t wait to share them with you next time!
